Note: This opinion piece came to our attention when it ran on the editorial page of the Washington Post, Saturday, April 16, 2005. Because Jon Kyl is a U.S. Senator writing on a matter of national security, we consider this effort to be in the public domain. If not, our apologies to the Post. In any event, we think it is of sufficient importance that it bears a wider distribution. Perhaps the Strategic Defense Initiative, or “Star Wars” program, begun under Ronald Reagan and which continues under the current administration, deserves more attention—and perhaps a bigger slice of the budget.  This is scary stuff.—Ed.
