NASA's New Horizons ‘Phones Home’ Safe after Pluto Flyby

The call everyone was waiting for is in. NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft phoned home just before 9 p.m. EDT Tuesday to tell the mission team and the world it had accomplished the historic first-ever flyby of Pluto.

“I know today we’ve inspired a whole new generation of explorers with this great success, and we look forward to the discoveries yet to come,” NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said. “This is a historic win for science and for exploration. We’ve truly, once again raised the bar of human potential.”

The preprogrammed “phone call” -- a 15-minute series of status messages beamed back to mission operations at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Maryland through NASA’s Deep Space Network -- ended a very suspenseful 21-hour waiting period. New Horizons had been instructed to spend the day gathering the maximum amount of data, and not communicating with Earth until it was beyond the Pluto system.

“With the successful flyby of Pluto we are celebrating the capstone event in a golden age of planetary exploration,” said John Grunsfeld, associate administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. “While this historic event is still unfolding --with the most exciting Pluto science still ahead of us -- a new era of solar system exploration is just beginning.  NASA missions will unravel the mysteries of Mars, Jupiter, Europa and worlds around other suns in the coming years."

Pluto is the first Kuiper Belt object visited by a mission from Earth. New Horizons will continue on its adventure deeper into the Kuiper Belt, where thousands of objects hold frozen clues as to how the solar system formed.

“Following in the footsteps of planetary exploration missions such as Mariner, Pioneer and Voyager, New Horizons has triumphed at Pluto,” says New Horizons principal investigator Alan Stern of the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado. “The New Horizons flyby completes the first era of planetary reconnaissance, a half century long endeavor that will forever be a legacy of our time."

New Horizons is collecting so much data it will take 16 months to send it all back to Earth.

“On behalf of everyone at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, I want to congratulate the New Horizons team for the dedication, skill, creativity, and determination they demonstrated to reach this historic milestone,” said APL Director Ralph Semmel. “We are proud to be a part of a truly amazing team of scientists, engineers, and mission operations experts from across our nation who worked tirelessly to ensure the success of this mission.”

APL designed, built and operates the New Horizons spacecraft and manages the mission for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate. SwRI leads the mission, science team, payload operations and encounter science planning. New Horizons is part of NASA’s New Frontiers Program, managed by the agency’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

NASA Administrator Statement on the Loss of SpaceX CRS-7

The following is a statement from NASA Administrator Charles Bolden on the loss Sunday of the SpaceX Commercial Resupply Services 7 (CRS-7) mission.

“We are disappointed in the loss of the latest SpaceX cargo resupply mission to the International Space Station. However, the astronauts are safe aboard the station and have sufficient supplies for the next several months. We will work closely with SpaceX to understand what happened, fix the problem and return to flight. The commercial cargo program was designed to accommodate loss of cargo vehicles. We will continue operation of the station in a safe and effective way as we continue to use it as our test bed for preparing for longer duration missions farther into the solar system.

“A Progress vehicle is ready to launch July 3, followed in August by a Japanese HTV flight. Orbital ATK, our other commercial cargo partner, is moving ahead with plans for its next launch later this year.

“SpaceX has demonstrated extraordinary capabilities in its first six cargo resupply missions to the station, and we know they can replicate that success. We will work with and support SpaceX to assess what happened, understand the specifics of the failure and correct it to move forward. This is a reminder that spaceflight is an incredible challenge, but we learn from each success and each setback. Today's launch attempt will not deter us from our ambitious human spaceflight program.”

AVWEB HELPS PRESERVE LEGENDARY B-29 FIFI

SARASOTA, FLORIDA (October 13, 2006)—Thanks to a timely news story in the AVwebFlash, the internet’s leading news and information service, and the generosity of a Texas inventor, famed Commemorative Air Force B-29 bomber Fifi may soon get the overhauled engines she so desperately needs. Fifi, the world’s only flyable B-29, has been grounded since the CAF determined it couldn’t keep her airworthy without a $3 million overhaul of her four Wright R-3350-57AM radial engines, power plants that gave Boeing fits from day the B-29 prototype first flew in 1942.

As AVweb reported in August, the CAF has had ongoing trouble with Fifi’s engines, most recently with metal contamination and damage following training flights last June. CAF has determined that the aircraft can continue its demonstration flights only if she’s refitted with custom-built engines that combine R-3350-26WD and 95W Wright variants, a dauntingly expensive job.

Upon reading of this in AVweb’s well-regarded twice -weekly news bulletin, AVwebFlash, Texas industrialist Joe Jamieson pledged $2 million for the engine project, putting CAF well on its way to

collecting the required $3 million. “New engines for the B-29 make its operation safer, so it is therefore reasonable for Mr. Jamieson to pledge some money to help make it happen,” said Raeleen Behr, public relations specialist for Jamieson’s company, American Automation Technologies, Inc. Jamieson is an aeronautics graduate from Parks College of Aeronautical Technology of Saint Louis University, holds an airframe and power plant certificate and is a former U.S. Air Force pilot. He has spent a productive career enhancing the safety of transportation systems, including the Automated Safety Hitch for trailers and other safety-related inventions for aircraft and ground vehicles.

“We’ve all seen Fifi at air shows,” said Tim Cole, vice-president of Belvoir Media Group, AVweb’s parent company, “and we’re looking forward to her return to the air show circuit. We’re honored that AVweb played a role in making that happen.”

AVwebFlash reaches more than 130,000 pilots and enthusiasts around the world and since its launch in 1995, it has become a leading online source of aviation news, information and effective, targeted advertising for aviation products. Belvoir Media Group also publishes Aviation Consumer, Aviation Safety, IFR, IFR Refresher, Light Plane Maintenance and Pilot’s Audio Update.

Sino Swearingen Aircraft Corporation Receives FAA Type Certification for the SJ30-2 Business Jet--November 2005

San Antonio, Texas, USA – October 27, 2005 – Sino Swearingen Aircraft Corporation announced today the receipt of a Federal Aviation Administration (“FAA”) Type Certificate (TC) for the new SJ30-2 business jet. This announcement marks the first “clean sheet” corporate jet aircraft design developed by a new company to achieve FAA Type Certification since the original concept of a corporate jet emerged almost 45 years ago.

The new Type Certificate approves the SJ30-2 jet for day, night, VFR (visual flight rules) and IFR (instrument flight rules) operations. Single pilot operations were approved and the full performance envelope was included in this TC issuance without restrictions. There are a few remaining approvals on the aircraft prior to initial deliveries, such as flight into known icing and certification of the cabin interior. After those remaining approvals, first customer deliveries are scheduled for the 1st quarter of 2006.

Dr. Ching Kuo, Chairman and CEO of Sino Swearingen said, “Just as the original corporate jets pioneered a new market, we believe the newly certified SJ30-2 will totally redefine the light jet market. With the ability to operate up to 49,000 feet, cruise up to 0.83 Mach, and fly non-stop flights to 2,500 nautical miles, future owners of the SJ30-2 will experience capabilities previously available only in corporate jets costing twice as much. And, with a maximum cabin pressurization level of 12 psi, our customers will also appreciate a sea level cabin altitude with the aircraft flying up to 41,000 feet. As much as I’m proud of my dedicated staff, I’m also very much appreciative to the FAA team for its cooperation, spirit, and hard work to help us achieve this goal.”

Dr. Carl Chen, President of Sino Swearingen said, “Our company is very proud to announce the receipt of the Type Certificate for the SJ30-2. The employees of our company as well as our investors have committed many years to achieving this goal and it’s very gratifying to finally announce our receipt of the Type Certificate. We have been developing and certifying the SJ30-2 for quite some time. We are now preparing ourselves to become a complete aircraft company, delivering airplanes to customers and supporting them as they operate their aircraft around the world.”

Alfred Baumbusch, Senior Vice President of Operations, echoed those comments, “So many people have worked diligently to achieve this goal. I am proud to be part of such a dedicated and talented team of individuals who designed, developed and tested the SJ30-2 to stringent FAA standards. I’m also privileged to have worked successfully with the FAA to focus on a common objective. Obtaining a Type Certificate is a significant achievement for Sino Swearingen and a landmark event for the corporate aviation industry.”

Bob Kromer, Senior Manager of Flight Operations added, “I’m excited to be so close to introducing the SJ30-2 to customers and pilots. Our flight test pilots and engineers have spent over 2,100 hours fine tuning the SJ30-2 to be easy to fly while delivering high performance. I’m proud to say both of these goals have been achieved. Our future customers will be more than impressed as they cruise at 0.80 Mach or greater with true airspeeds well over 460 knots. Our airplanes climb at maximum takeoff weight directly to 43,000 feet and cruise up to 2,500 nautical miles without the need to stop for fuel. And with the Vref speeds as low as 105 knots, the airplane is easy to land and can be operated from shorter runways. The SJ30-2 is the complete package. Our test pilots are confident that our future customers will agree.”

SINO SWEARINGEN AIRCRAFT BECOMES FIRST NEW COMPANY IN 35 YEARS TO RECEIVE FINAL FAA TIA APPROVALS FOR NEW TWINJET AIRCRAFT--September 2005

STUNNING, ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE, HISTORY MAKING SUCCESS, VIRTUALLY GUARANTEES FAA TC FOR THE NEW SJ30-2 CORPORATE JET THIS YEAR

San Antonio, TX, USA, August 16, 2005, Sino Swearingen Aircraft Corp. (SSAC) stunned the world of aviation with a major announcement today.  For the first time in the last 35 year history of aviation a “new company” was issued final TIA’s (Type Inspection Authorizations) by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for an all new, clean slate, twinjet aircraft.

This spectacular announcement is the final threshold before receiving the FAA TC (Type Certification) and virtually guarantees SSAC the certification this year for the new SJ30-2, the World’s Fastest and Longest Range light business jet.

During the SJ30-2 extraordinary certification flight test program, all 13 blocks of testing (TIA's) were  approved and issued by the FAA.  Completion of these critical TIA’s is extremely significant as they provided full exploration of all aspects of flying and operating the SJ30-2 by SSAC factory and FAA engineering test pilots.   Three high performance SJ30-2’s have been in extensive flight testing and have run the gauntlet of FAA tests from stall speeds of 91 kts to a fantastic Mmo of Mach .83; through high speed dive testing up to Mach .90, all the way through engine-out testing and every aspect of the flight envelope, in-side and out, that could possibly be imposed on a new jet aircraft.  The SJ30-2 has consistently shown complete adherence and total compliance to all FAA regulations.

The company has maintained a time-line for certification which spanned approximately 4.8 years since the first flight of the first FAA conformed SJ30-2 twinjet in the fourth quarter of 2000 and has built five flight test aircraft and two complete static and fatigue test aircraft.

Starting 2 ― years ago, the program began accelerating dramatically to extraordinary limits when Dr. Carl L. Chen CEO & President , along with Alfred Baumbusch, Sr. VP, Operations, entered the scene.  Working intensively with the FAA, under the direction of Robert Kromer, Senior Manager, Flight Test Operations & Chief Pilot, the combined talents of 500 hard working and dedicated employees at San Antonio, TX, & Martinsburg, WV, made it possible for SSAC to reach this amazing threshold by obtaining the final TIA certification under almost impossible odds.   The entire company resounded in cheers of celebration and praise for this huge accomplishment.

Dr. Ching Chiang Kuo, Chairman of Sino Swearingen Aircraft Corporation stated today, “The issuing of the Final TIA is an important milestone for SSAC that paves the way for us to receive the TC for the SJ30-2. And we are very appreciative to the FAA for recognizing our efforts and accomplishments.  Through this TIA process, we have demonstrated that the SJ30-2 outperforms all aircraft in its class in speed, range, cabin pressure etc. It can fly at M=0.83 which is faster than it’s counterparts.  With cabin delta pressure at 12.0 psi, it can maintain sea level pressure up to 41,000 ft and provide a comfortable environment for its passengers.  We are prepared now is to complete the F&R flight testing and a few open items prior to receiving the SJ30-2 TC.  During this time we have initiated the mass production schedule to deliver to our customers for them to enjoy”.

Dr. Carl Chen, President and CEO of SSAC, added, “We are all ecstatic; few people may realize the historic and economic impact of this announcement.  Certainly the competition receives final TIA’s occasionally, but they are not a new company and very seldom do they have a totally new design.  It was not their first jet aircraft or their first time to receive the final TIA’s. It’s not easy, in fact, it’s a massive, almost impossible undertaking for a small, new company with limited resources and it becomes so intense that we do not believe any new company with a new twinjet corporate aircraft has accomplished receiving the Final TIA’s since the 60’s.  Now, out of nowhere, in a short time, there will be a new manufacturer on the world aviation scene with a new jet aircraft that has speed and intercontinental range performance figures that exceed every light jet business aircraft on earth.”

Sino Swearingen Aircraft Corporation is FAA certifying the new SJ30-2 twin engine business jet at San Antonio TX and major structure manufacturing at Martinsburg West VA, with over 500 employees in four facilities totaling over 220,000 sq ft in the USA Coast To Coast.  The Company continues spectacular acceleration and finalization of each TIA for the FAA certification projected to be final in the second half of this year.  The new Sino Swearingen SJ30-2 business jet is a very high performance, ultra long range, intercontinental, twinjet aircraft with an incredible 2,875 sm range and one of the highest cruise speeds in the industry at Mach .83 (560 mph).  The SJ30-2 will operate at altitudes up to 49,000 feet and maintain a “Sea Level Cabin” through 41,000 ft with the best pressurization in the world, 12 psi.  The new SJ30-2 will also have certification for single pilot operations and a slow approach speed, Vref of approximately 105 kts coupled with very easy to fly handling characteristics and short field landing and takeoff distances under 4,000 ft.  Sino Swearingen Aircraft Corporation business plan is aggressively geared to become the world’s leading aircraft producer by creating a family of cost-efficient, high performance, high-quality, superior technology, business jets.  Additional information, updates, 360 virtual tour views, photos, and specifications are available at: www.SJ30Jet.com  Specifications are preliminary and subject to change.

Press release--September 2005

greatbritishUFO_show2005

Dear friends:

As we approach late summer we are realising that October 1st is not that far away.

We are fully prepared for our first ‘Great British UFO Show and look forward to meeting each and every one of you there.

One reason why we selected the venue was the fact that the concert room is fully equipped with permanently installed equipment. Audio, video and lighting and this been the case means we don’t have the worry of hiring unfamiliar equipment and trying to work out how it all goes together on the day. We have tested the equipment already.

We think the whole event will be an enjoyable and social experience for newcomers and old hands alike.

Some people might not be fully aware of all the speakers on our guest list, let me tell you I personally invited these speakers after long consultations with my colleagues.

The criteria for selection was the fact that each guest has a very interesting story to tell, some are telling of their own very personal experiences whilst others are relating well researched case studies. These are people who have been known to me for many years but have not really had the exposure that either their work or stories deserve.

Of course Philip Mantle is well known around the world as an author and for his BUFORA and Alien Autopsy connections but our other guests have worked hard on or lived with this subject for many years.

Ann and Jason Andrews

(a personal story of continued alien abduction).

Christopher Martin

(Quality video evidence)

John Hanson

(Retired long serving Policeman john will talk about Rendlesham and Beyond)

Malcolm Robinson

(Scotland's UFOs)

We also have a number of special guests visiting the event who will have reports and video to share with you

By way of an introduction to our invited guests you might like to tune into ‘Talk UFO’ this is our very own Internet Radio Station and broadcasting right now is a 90 minute discussion show with all of our guests giving a preview to what they will be presenting in Leeds.

See link below.

http://www.ufodata.co.uk/radio.htm

The station is on the live365 network and you can listen via windows media or Real media players or you can download the free live365 player. The system is supported by adverts but if you like the set up and there are thousands of channels available you can pay a small monthly subscription and get an ‘ad free’ system.

To all those who have already purchased tickets, thank you, you will have received them a few days after your order was received here.

Peschges Variometer Introduces New VFR Glass Cockpit Systems--August  2005

US-launch of VP-EFIS in Oshkosh AIRVENTURE (booth 814) flymarket.

AACHEN, Germany - June 17, 2005 - Peschges Variometer GmbH, well kown for reliable and sophisticated avionics for general aviation, introduces new glass cockpit systems: VP-EFIS and VP-EMS. Both are based on a ten inch transflective TFT display, which provides best readability in bright sunshine, beneath dark clouds or at night. The light weight of less than two lbs each and the low power consumption of about 0.7 Amperes each, makes it possible to upgrade general aviation as well as ultralight airplanes easily.

VP-EFIS - electronic flight information systemvpefis_e_06_384dpi_SM

The VP-EFIS is an electronic flight information system with an integrated GPS and a moving map, showing all current airspace restrictions. The map is displayed by vektor graphics and thus the pilot can easily zoom to any scale he desires or fade out items, he does not need. Furthermore, the screen contains six freely configurable data fields and a permanent display of airspeed, altitude, rate of climb or descent, course, track, heading and naviagtion items, such as the next waypoint and the nearest airport. (Click picture to enlarge.)

Peschges Variometer developed a new type of airspace warning facilities, included in the VP-EFIS. Instead of warning the pilot about airspaces and obstacles 360° around the plane, the system calculates the airspace warning with the actual heading and altitude of the airplane. Only airspaces or obstacles in the direction of the actual heading is reportet, what leads to a much greater clearness of airspace warning. Furthermore, the system does not report any warnings, if the pilot is going to fly above or beneath any airspace. In a matter of course, the pilot can configure the warning sector in its length, width and height.

Due to integrated pressure sensors, the system can display airspeed and barometric altitudes, in addition to the values calculated with the GPS signal. Thus, the system can provide the pilot with winddirection and speed data.

About Peschges Variometer GmbH

Peschges Variometer GmbH has developed and manufacrured general aviation avionics since 1980. 25 years of experience with display systems and pressure sensor technology have made  Peschges Variometer GmbH part of the evolution of general aviation avionics. It was the first company to build a preconfigurable, on board soaring computer with integrated GPS. Steady development and improvement of Peschges systems have accelerated the progress of display and logging systems for more than 25 years.

After introducing both systems at the Aero in Friedrichshafen, Germany earlier this year, Peschges Variometer will present the VP-EFIS at the EAA Oshkosh Air Venture (booth 814) flymarket

ADDITIONAL SPECTACULAR RESULTS RECEIVED FROM TESTING NEW SINO SWEARINGEN SJ30-2 TWINJET

INCREDIBLE PHOTO OF NEW JET DURING MINIMUM UNSTICK TAKEOFF--August  2005

San Antonio, TX, USA, July 14, 2005, Sino Swearingen Aircraft Corp. (SSAC) announced today that the FAA recently issued a Type Inspection Authorization (TIA) for the new SJ30-2 executive business jet, that included Minimum unstick Vr abuse testing.  SJ30_unstick_testVSM

Company minimum unstick speed (VMU) testing was recently completed during a series of flight tests in which the test pilots purposely abused the normal takeoff procedures by testing for tail strike or stall capabilities at Vr.  The new SJ30-2 successfully demonstrated that it can safely takeoff and fly away from ground effects while maintaining extreme pitch attitudes without any occurrence of a tail strike or stall.

Pitch attitudes at takeoff were at extreme positions of up to 15 degrees nose up.  The tests open the way to unrestricted rotation speed Vr that will provide low and easy takeoff speeds V2 and shorter takeoff distances.  This assists in the projected easy and very good handling takeoffs with the new SJ30-2 twinjet aircraft.

Sino Swearingen Aircraft Corporation is certifying the new SJ30-2 in San Antonio TX with 430 employees in four facilities totaling over 220,000 sq ft in the USA Coast To Coast.  The Company continues spectacular acceleration of the FAA certification projected to be final in the second half of this year 2005.  The new Sino Swearingen SJ30-2 business jet is a high performance, long range, intercontinental, twinjet aircraft with an incredible 2,875 sm range and one of the highest cruise speeds in the industry to Mach .83 (560 mph).  The SJ30-2 will operate at altitudes to 49,000 feet and maintain a “Sea Level Cabin” to 41,000 ft with the best pressurization in the business jet world, 12 psi.  The new SJ30-2 will also have certification for single pilot operations.

SJ30-2 TWINJET COMPLETES WATER INGESTION HIGH SPEED TESTING FOR FLOODED RUNWAYS --August  2005

Sino Swearingen Aircraft Corporation FAA Certification Due the Second Half of This Year with Deliveries to Start Shortly After

San Antonio, TX, USA, July 11, 2005, Sino Swearingen Aircraft Corporation  (SSAC) announced today that it has   successfully completed testing of the new SJ30-2 twinjet aircraft for drenched and flooded runway conditions for both rain and slush.

SJ30_water_testVSMIntensive testing of the aircraft includes a number of very high speed runs of the aircraft through water troughs with levels of water up to three quarters inch deep.  The maximum water depth was set to include the requirements for both the FAA and EASA JAA, testing under rain drenched, slush, and flooded runway conditions.

Speed of the SJ30-2 as it enters the water troughs are as high as 126 mph.  The Aircraft Main Landing Gear and Nose Landing Gear are all put through their paces numerous times in this spectacular test.  The purpose of the test is to simulate a flooded runway with rain and slush verification and that no tendency exists for unapproved amounts of water to enter the engine inlets during landing, take off, and runway operations.

The SJ30-2 twin engine, business jet completed this testing without modifications to the aircraft design which are sometimes necessary on other aircraft.

Dr. Carl Chen, CEO and President of Sino Swearingen Aircraft Corporation said today;  “We are ecstatic about this amazing test as it shows the superb functionality and strength of the “trailing link” landing gear and it’s excellent operation under the harshest conditions.  The entire company is excited as this test emphasizes some of our final tests to FAA certify the new SJ30-2 by the second half of this year.  The accomplishments and extra team efforts provided by the employees at SSAC and the FAA are significant in obtaining the certification on time and are greatly appreciated by our customers and the entire management team at SSAC.”

This is an incredible landing gear design and location, that consists of the latest  “trailing link” landing system.  It is similar to an airliner design as it uses two wheels on each main landing gear and two wheels on the nose gear for a total of six wheels and tires on the aircraft.  This combination of dual wheels all the way around and trailing link landing gear provides smooth, excellent, taxi, takeoff and landing characteristics and breaking efficiency as well as dual wheel safety protection for the aircraft in case of a tire loss.

Sino Swearingen Aircraft Corporation is FAA certifying the new SJ30-2 twin engine business jet at San Antonio TX with over 500  employees in four facilities totaling over 220,000 sq ft in the USA Coast To Coast.  The Company continues spectacular acceleration of the FAA certification projected to be final in the second half of this year.

Eviation Jets, Producer Of The Vantage Jet, Applies For CTA Certification--6/2005

Private Business Flyers To Receive New

SAO JOSE DOS CAMPOS, Brazil And AMES, Iowa/EWORLDWIRE/May 2, 2005 --- Travelers who need speed, comfort, and affordability in small airline transportation may find a solution in the form of Eviation Jets' Vantage Jets in the near future.

The Vantage Jet, designed as a private business jet, is safer, has higher performance standards, flies at higher altitudes and is more comfortable and quiet compared to other low-cost alternatives.

Eviation Jets' made its application for certification to the Brazilian Center for Aerospace Technology (CTA), which was approved April, 28. This means the jet will be permitted to travel in U.S. airspace - the United States' Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) maintains a reciprocal agreement which allows the CTA to certify aircraft in Brazil and receive dual certification in the U.S.

The development of the jet comes out of Eviation Jets' acquisition of all technical drawings, trademarks, molds and tooling of bankrupt VisionAire Corporation of St. Louis, Mo. on Oct. 2, 2003.

To establish a local presence in Brazil, facilitate financial investment, manage local subcontracts, and manage the aeronautical engineering team, Eviation Jets created a local Brazilian subsidiary, Eviation Jets do Brasil Ltda. Guido Pessotti, president and chief engineer of the Brazilian subsidiary, is responsible for Vantage Jet certification and managing the aerospace engineering team. Pessotti's experience includes design and certification of 13 different jet aircraft.

The classic prototype of the Vantage jet has been redesigned to include the addition of two 2,100-pound-thrust Williams FJ44-1AP turbofans mounted on the exterior of the fuselage. This in turn increased the fuselage capacity and is now slated to seat up to 10 people.

Eviation Jets is featured in an in-depth cover story in Revista Flap magazine. Visit www.revistaflap.com.br for more information.
